After years of waiting, Maryland online sports betting is now live. Seven sportsbooks launched at 9 a.m. this morning, and people are celebrating the milestone for the US sports betting industry.

Bet on Sports Anywhere

With the launch of seven mobile sports betting platforms in Maryland, residents now have access to a sportsbook in their pocket at any time. Johnny Avello, Director of Race and Sports Operations at DraftKings, explained that this is a huge convenience for bettors. As per Richardson:

“It’s about time because I’ve been doing it consistently probably since like last November when they opened the sportsbooks.”

“As soon as I get off [of work], I’m putting some things together for the NFL games on Thanksgiving and I might do something for the NBA games tonight,” he added.

Wes Richardson explained that he used to have a tough time getting out of state to place his bets. He was stuck in traffic traveling to a physical sportsbook into a physical sportsbook where he faces even more inconveniences with lines and another delay.

Here are the seven online sportsbooks that launched in the Old Line State:

With the launch of these seven new platforms, it’s clear that Maryland is committed to making sports betting accessible and convenient for its residents.

Not Everybody Agrees

As online sports betting becomes more prevalent, some people are voicing their concerns. Steve Cosby, a resident of Maryland, is one of them. He is frustrated that his state is supporting and promoting gambling.

“I think gambling of all kinds is taking advantage of the poor and I don’t think we as a state should be promoting it in any way,” Cosby said.

“I think a private institution like a casino is more acceptable because you have to go out and go there deliberately whereas online betting makes it accessible to everybody without effort and it just seems predatory.”

Who Can Bet on Online Sportsbooks?

Bettors must be 21 or older and physically in the state of Maryland, but don’t need to be Maryland residents to bet on sports online. The process is simple: create an account with a licensed gambling site, confirm your identity and age, deposit money into your account, and start placing bets.

All licensed gambling sites use geolocation technology to ensure that bettors are physically in the state of Maryland when they place their bets. This technology uses satellite signals to pinpoint the location of each user and make sure they are within state borders.

In addition, all licensed gambling sites require bettors to confirm their identity and age with a government-issued ID. As long as you meet these requirements, you can bet on sports online from anywhere in the state of Maryland.
