hockey player What We Consider For Our Maryland Sportsbook Reviews

Our goal is to ensure we evaluate sportsbooks in a fair way to leave you with accurate information which will allow you to make informed decisions based on our findings. We have set criteria by which we measure each sportsbook, covering every aspect of each Maryland sports betting site’s operations.

On each area that we critically analyze, we will give it a score between 1-5 so you are able to see how highly or lowly we rate each area. These scores will then be combined to create an overall rating for each sportsbook we review.

Here are the areas that we individually examine for each sportsbook Maryland is expected to give licenses to:

Sign-up Bonus

All sports betting Maryland sites offer a welcome bonus to try and entice new customers to join them over their competitors. Our experts take a look at what bonuses and promotions are offered, and the T&Cs assigned to them to see if they are really as good as they say, or if they are not quite as good as they appear at first glance.

Other Promotions

We will also be looking at ongoing promos as well because while it’s great to reward new customers, what about existing customers? Why should they be left out of all the fun of receiving free bets and other rewards? After all, if a customer feels appreciated, they’ll remain happy and loyal to the brand.

Sign-up Process

Signing up for a new Maryland sportsbook should be a nice, quick, and easy process. We take a look at just how simple it is, and if existing accounts with brands can help you to sign up more efficiently. After all, if you want to get started quickly, it’s no use picking a sportsbook where you have to wait to place a wager.

User Experience Across All Platforms

Many sports betting sites in Maryland will offer multiple platforms to access their services, from being able to play on a desktop PC to using a dedicated app on your smartphone. We explore all methods of accessing these sites to see just how good they are for the average user to use.

Payment Methods

Whether it is for depositing funds into your account or withdrawing winnings you’ve earned, we take a look at and evaluate all the available payment methods. We’ll cover everything from if fees are charged, limits that may apply, and the processing time for payments to be made.

Betting Options/Markets

Some sites may offer more markets than other operators, and other Maryland sportsbooks may provide more variety in terms of bet types. We take a look at what each provider offers to see just how much bettors really have access to when using their services.

Betting Odds

It’s all well and good offering more markets and options, but if the odds don’t make it worthwhile for major sporting events, what is the point of using a bad Maryland sportsbook? That’s why the Bet Buddy MD experts check out the latest events and compare odds between providers to see how competitive they are.

Live Betting

We also take a look at whether live betting is offered. This is when you are not just able to place a wager before a game, but where you can also bet in-play. This covers bets such as the next player to score a touchdown, or if a player may be sent off the field in a certain upcoming time period.

Customer Service

If a business doesn’t look after its customers, then what good is a Maryland sportsbook? That’s why we check out what their customer service is like, not only evaluating the availability of contact methods, but also using those methods to see firsthand how quickly they reply and how helpful their staff are.

Legality and Safety

And finally, the legality and safety of the Maryland sports betting sites is of the utmost importance. We look to see if they have the relevant licenses from the Maryland State Lottery and Gaming Control Agency and what security they have in place to protect your money and your data.

Expected Maryland Sports Betting Sites

So far, there is only one operator in Maryland that has been awarded a license to operate an online sportsbook, and that is for a newly established sportsbook called BetFanatics. Owned by the company Fanatics, which specializes in selling sports memorabilia, little is known about this new sportsbook. They haven’t yet launched anywhere else in the US, and Maryland could in fact be the first state where BetFanatics launches.

Other expected Maryland betting sites include the below, which already have licenses for retail sportsbook locations in Maryland:

Barstool Sportsbook Logo

Currently operating from Hollywood Casino in Perryville, Barstool Sports is already an established operator in Maryland. They’re known for offering multi-sport parlays with flexible parlay options and having low wagering requirements on their bonuses and promos.

Currently, in most states, they are offering a risk-free bet of up to $1,000 plus a $10 bonus just for signing up to use their site or app, and there is no reason why this offer won’t be extended to Maryland bettors.

BetMGM logo

BetMGM Maryland currently has a license to operate from MGM National Harbor. After many years already in the gambling industry, which began with their long list of casinos and resorts, they have now entered the sports betting market.

To welcome in new customers, BetMGM is currently offering customers across the US a risk-free bet up to $1,000, as well as providing live streaming of a wide range of sports via their website and app.

BetRivers logo

Operating from Bingo World, BetRivers has a large offering of bet types and markets available to all who arrive at its site throughout the US. Their welcome bonus is a little less generous than some others, offering only a 100% deposit match up to $250; however, they have much lower wagering requirements than other sportsbooks, so it can be seen as a more beneficial one to take.

Caesars Sportsbook logo

Caesars is the largest retail sportsbook in the US, so it is no surprise they have a Caesars sportsbook Maryland location already, based at their own Horseshoe Casino.

They also offer one of the most generous welcome bonuses to new customers, offering a risk-free bet up to $1,500, though it does have some wagering requirements attached. But their odds boost promos on selected markets do make up for it.

DraftKings sportsbook logo

DraftKings Maryland already has a retail location at the M&T Bank Stadium, home to the Baltimore Ravens NFL franchise. They made their name in fantasy sports and now are working their way up in the sports betting world, offering public and private pools for betting.

To welcome new customers, they are currently offering a double bonus with a $50 free bet plus a 20% deposit bonus up to $1,000.

FanDuel sportsbook logo

They’ve become one of the biggest sportsbooks in the US, including the number one operator in New York ahead of big names like Caesars and DraftKings. So it’s no surprise that there is already a FanDuel Sportsbook Maryland retail location at Live! Casino and Hotel.

Customers can’t get enough of their risk-free bet up to a $1,000 welcome offer, but what they enjoy more is how generous FanDuel is, rewarding existing members with free games and ongoing promos.

PointsBet sportsbook logo

The last expected Maryland sportsbook is PointsBet, a 100% independent sportsbook that is currently based at the Riverboat on the Potomac. Being independent they offer the largest selection of unique bets, with some markets having over 250 different bet types available. They too are also offering a double welcome bonus, with two risk-free bets up to $2,000 available for new customers.

Possible Betting Sites in Maryland

In addition to those that already have retail licenses in MD, it is also possible that we could see the following Maryland sports betting sites appear as well:

FOX Bet

FOX Bet sportsbook logo

FOX Bet comes from the people behind Fox Sports, owned by none other than media mogul Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch also owns the UK sports media company Sky Sports, which has its own sports betting website in the UK, and now he is doing the same in the US with FOX Bet. They’re beginning to launch in as many states as they can, so it’s possible we could soon see them in Maryland.

TwinSpires

TwinSpires sportsbook logo

TwinSpires is a US sportsbook that is popping up in numerous states where online sports betting is being legalized. They are known for offering competitive odds on all major sports at their existing retail outlets and online, so they would definitely be a welcome addition to MD.

Unibet

Unibet sportsbook logo

Unibet is a global brand that has sports betting sites in locations around the world, and they’re now setting up operations in the US. Maryland could be one of their next destinations as they look to establish a foothold in the US market, and with an award-winning customer support network, they could well be a popular choice.

WynnBET

Wynnbet sportsbook logo

The folks behind WynnBET have many years of experience in the gambling industry much like the Bet Buddy MD professionals. They’re now launching their sports betting sites and mobile apps across many states and are putting a lot of money behind their marketing, recruiting a number of big sports personalities for celebrity endorsement.

Land-Based Sportsbooks in MD

We’ve mentioned that the expected online sportsbooks are more likely to launch in Maryland because they already have land-based retail sportsbooks in Maryland. The difference between operating online and in a retail location is quite significant, more than one just having a physical presence and the other a digital one.

At land-based sportsbooks, it is harder to compare odds because it’s not like online where you just take a quick second to see who has the best odds. There are also usually higher limits than online operators, and banking is easier because it’s all done in cash or on a card and winnings can be collected instantly. Plus, you don’t need an account, you can just walk in and place a bet (if you are of legal age, of course).

girl with basketball icon Is Sports Betting Legal in Maryland?

The simple answer is yes, Maryland sports betting is legal, but it has been a long process getting there, and it’s still not quite finished.

It all started in November 2020, when a general election ballot was held to see if residents wanted the law changed to legalize sports betting in MD. Voters overwhelmingly voted yes, and so HB 940 was formed and put to the Maryland State Legislature in April 2021, where it passed with much support once again.

In July 2021, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency announced that it had finally decided on and set the rules that would apply to legal sports betting in Maryland. But it wasn’t until December 2021 that the first sports betting action took place when Governor Larry Hogan placed the first legal sports wager at the BetMGM Sportsbook in MGM National Harbor.

As it stands, there are eight operators that have retail licenses: Barstool, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet, and TwinSpires.

Online sports betting didn’t launch at the same time, though, and on June 23, 2022, the pressure was beginning to mount for MD to legalize online sports betting. This followed the announcement that BetFanatics was awarded the first license to operate a Maryland sportsbook online.

It is said that both operators and the state want the launch of online sportsbooks in Maryland to happen before the start of the next NFL season.

soccer player Licensing of Maryland Sportsbooks

When it comes to licensing in Maryland, the regulator who will be issuing licenses and ensuring that sportsbooks comply with Maryland’s sports betting law is the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency. Without a license and approval from the state’s regulatory body, a sportsbook operating in Maryland would be doing so illegally.

Being regulated means that the casinos meet the standards and requirements of the state regulator to ensure the services they offer are fair, and safe and operate in a moral way that ensures they promote responsible gambling.

There is going to be a limit of 60 mobile wagering licenses once online gambling is legalized, with a review scheduled in December 2025 to see if that needs to be increased. Anyone who has a current license can apply for one of these mobile licenses.

There are two types of licenses currently available:

Class A Licenses

There are ten Class A Licenses, which will be available to six land-based casinos, three professional sports teams/stadiums, and the Maryland Jockey Club.

Class B Licenses

Class B Licenses will be available for 30 other businesses with physical locations in MD. There will also be seven additional Class B Licenses offered to Maryland State Fairgrounds, four off-track betting parlors, and two bingo halls that must have 200 or more machines on site.

martial arts boy Payment Methods for Online Sportsbooks

When it comes to payment methods for both depositing and withdrawing funds at online sportsbooks, they can differ between each operator. The most common forms of payment for your account are Debit/Credit Card, Online Banking, PayPal, Play+ Prepaid Card, and VIP Preferred Check. You should note that the amount of payment methods available for withdrawing is usually lower than that of depositing.

Sportsbooks don’t usually charge fees for depositing funds, but providers of payment methods may charge you. There will also be minimum deposits, which can differ between payment methods and can range from $10-$20. Processing times for payments made into your account are usually instant.

When it comes to withdrawing funds, there are usually again minimum limits you must have in your account to withdraw. Processing times also take much longer, with PayPal being one of the fastest and often paid in 24-48 hours, with online banking taking on average 3-5 business days.

swimmer icon Pros and Cons of Online Sportsbooks

As with anything in life, there are always pros and cons to everything.

The pros of online sportsbooks are vast, though, with access to so much more at your fingertips. Not only can you bet anywhere from your smartphone, but you can also place bets at any time, whereas retail sportsbooks are in set locations and have opening and closing times. Odds are more regularly updated too, and easier to compare by opening a few apps, rather than traveling between different retail locations.

You are also less likely to miss out on promotions and be rewarded with more free bets, which will all be sent to your phone if you have push notifications switched on for your Maryland sports betting apps. Ensuring you don’t miss out on these promos means using an online Maryland sportsbook can end up being more profitable. Plus, with live streaming of games and events too, they can even be more fun.

There are some downsides too. Processing times for withdrawing your winnings take longer, whereas, in a physical sportsbook, you can just walk up to a window and claim your cash right there and then.

There is also the fact that in order to bet online, you need to create an account, and some people don’t like giving out personal details. This is fine, but it does mean that if a particular sportsbook has a rewards program, you could be missing out on some serious rewards like hotel stays and dining out for free at selected resorts.
